Affluent spa town Harrogate in North Yorkshire has been crowned the UK’s happiest town, according to an on-line property website.

More than 40,000 people were quizzed throughout the UK on 12 different factors such as neighbourliness, safety, amenities, cost, and the amount of space in their home, and the ever-affluent Harrogate thanks to its great sense of community, atmosphere and down to earth feel finished first.

Harrogate pipped Stockport, another northern town to first place, whilst almost all the bottom 10 places, nine in fact, all feature areas in London, even the super wealthy area of Chiswick languished well at the bottom.

Britain’s happiest places to live

1. Harrogate, 2. Stockport, 3. Ipswich, 4. Exeter, 5. St Albans, 6. Kingston upon Thames, 7. Bath, 8. Worcester, 9. Bromley, 10. Truro

Britain’s unhappiest places to live

1. East London, 2. Croydon, 3. East central London, 4. Ilford, 5. South-east London, 6. Enfield, 7. North-west London, 8. West London, 9. Dudley, 10. North London

Overall the survey showed that people living in the north were happier than those living in the south.

So it seems money does not buy you happiness after all and it isn’t as ‘grim up north’ as people make out! Where abouts do you live in north Leeds and what do you like/dislike about the area?

Leeds adventure charity The Apex Challenge up for national award

A small team of volunteers behind the one of the country’s biggest outdoor adventure competitions for young people has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The Apex Challenge has been named as one of the finalists in the national ‘Technology for Good Awards’ which showcases the best ways charities use technology.

The Leeds-based team is one of just four finalists in the Innovation category – selected for the way they have combined technology with adventure at their outdoor events.

The Apex Challenge works alongside the Scouts to deliver tough adventure competitions for hundreds of young people. Over the last ten years they have developed a unique way of delivering the events to appeal to young people, using technologies such as electronic microchip scoring, instant results, graphical simulations and the bespoke Apex Challenge smartphone app. Technology has always been at the heart of the Apex Challenge, and the diverse team of volunteers has worked hard to develop innovative new solutions to make the adventure events appealing and relevant to the young people taking part. Recent events have taken place across the Yorkshire area including at Bramham Park near Wetherby and at Otley Chevin near Bramhope.

Event Director Matt Richards says, “This is clearly a great achievement and a huge illustration of how well-regarded the Apex Challenge events have become. It’s all down to our team’s dedication, enthusiasm and months of work behind the scenes which makes the events so highly thought of.

“It’s a huge honour to be named as a finalist alongside other very worthy charities. Some of those shortlisted are huge multi-national organisations, so it’s great that the Apex Challenge is named alongside them for the innovative use of technology.”
