Do you have a sweet tooth but you’re fed up of the hype surrounding cupcakes? Do you want something else to give to satisfy your chocolate needs? Jason Rowe, Executive Chef at Dine On The Rowe could have the answer for you with Brownie Heaven.

Jason Rowe is the brains behind Brownie Heaven; an online store selling a wide range of brownies which is proving to be a success, despite competition from the thriving cupcake industry. The Brownie Heaven website welcomes visitors with the greeting “You’ve landed in Brownie Heaven a land of amazing rich dark chocolatey love”. How could any chocoholic resist? The website then goes on to display the variety of mouth-watering brownies that Brownie Heaven has to offer, ranging from the standard “dark chewy chocolate brownies” and “dark chocolate brownies” to more unusual types such as “jaffa cake slutty brownies”. For those of you who are partial to an Irish twist, then the “Irish whiskey chocolate brownies” might take your fancy. If you’re feeling spoilt for choice then perhaps the “mixed selections of chocolate brownies” might be for you; the package includes an assortment of all brownies including original, chilli, cognac, rum, almond, peppermint, coconut and hazelnut. Brownie Heaven also offer a range of cakes, including the “Brownie Wownie Mountain Cake”, and gifts for special occasions such as the “Mother’s Day Mountain”.

Top Chef

Jason’s expertise doesn’t stop at brownies. As well as creating these recipes, which he has been doing for over 4 years, he also owns a restaurant in Beverley called Dine on the Rowe. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and evening meals, and presents an excellent choice of delicious sounding dishes with locally sourced ingredients. If you still need your brownie fix when visiting this restaurant then don’t despair, as the slutty brownie is featured on the dessert list.

Sunday Lunch

If you visit for Sunday lunch, which is available between the hours of 12pm and 4.30pm, you’ll find yourself trying to resist “Brownie Heaven”; a dark chocolate brownie and white chocolate blondie, home-made vanilla ice-cream and dark chocolate sauce. This sounds like a perfect way to finish off a hearty Sunday lunch. For more information on the culinary delights on offer at Dine on the Rowe check out the official website.

If reading this article has got your taste buds tingling and you want to order one or more of these luxurious sounding brownies, then you can do so by visiting the Brownie Heaven website here.

Deliveries are made on working days only and the date of delivery cannot be guaranteed; however the majority arrive the next working day. Each brownie gift is lovingly presented in a gift box, and brownie mountains are ribbon wrapped in cellophane on a cake board with a ribbon tie. Further delivery information can be found on the website.

The Yorkshire Cancer Centre is hosting Yorkshire Rocks Cancer; a two day event which will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June in Millennium Square, Leeds.

The Yorkshire Rocks Cancer event kicks off at 5:30pm on Saturday with performances from local bands Carnabells, The Idol Dead, Marsicans and The Transmission. The event is strictly for over 14s, and under 18s must be accompanied by a fee-paying adult.

The second event on Sunday is a Family Fun Day, with gates opening at 11am. There will be something for everyone, including folk music, tribute bands, and zumba, along with a number of interactive children’s activities such as a funfair and face painting. Licensed bar and food stalls will be available on site across both days.

Yorkshire Rocks Cancer is being held to raise funds for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, which funds research and provides support and home comforts to patients at the Bexley Wing of St James University Hospital. The charity launched a £10 million appeal in 2007 to support St James Institute of Oncology, which is the largest cancer centre in Europe and is responsible for treating 1500 patients a day. The Yorkshire Cancer Centre currently has a ten year plan in place which focuses on developing research and treatments to ensure that more people survive cancer.

Tickets for Saturday are priced at £15 and tickets for Sunday cost just £5, with under 12s going free. Every penny raised will go towards ensuring that the Yorkshire Cancer Centre reaches its £10 million target.

Tickets for Yorkshire Rocks Cancer can be purchased from Ticketline here.

Have you ever wished that you could have the best job in the world? Well one Leeds student may be well on his way to achieving just that

Leeds University student Chris Henson is on his way to making this dream come true, thanks to Tourism Australia’s ‘Best job in the world’ competition.

Chris has just been shortlisted for Tourism Australia’s ‘Best job in the world’; a competition offering 18-30 year olds the opportunity of a lifetime by applying for one of six roles, including Chief Funster, Outback Adventurer, Park Range, Wildlife Caretaker, Lifestyle Photographer and Taste Master. Over 600,000 people from across the world entered the competition and only 150 remain, including 23 Brits!

Chris applied for the role of ‘Taste Master’, and winning this competition would see him spend a year in Australia where he would spend his time foraging, sampling and blogging about the local cuisine, not to mention earning a six figure salary! As well as spending time enjoying luxurious food and drinks, the winning candidate would also take part in a number of exciting adventures, such as mud crabbing, diving for lobster or trekking through the ancient Bungle Bungle range. They will also have the opportunity to visit events such as the Margaret River Gourmet Escape, the Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival and the Taste of Gascoyne Festival.

Chris originally entered the competition with a 30 second video clip, outlining the reasons why he should be selected. He chose to make the video humorous, using a number of food-based puns. In order to make it to the final 3, and the last stage of the competition, Chris is required to generate interest in his pursuit, and has been blogging about his food experiences. He has also been inviting the online community to post videos to his blog, using food-based puns in a similar style to his competition entry with the header “Chris Henson should be a Taste Master because…”

You can watch Chris’ 30 second clip below and the other 24 hopefuls for the Taste Master role here.

The first group; ‘Lucy’, will encounter Mr Tumnus, Mrs Beaver, Father Christmas, the White Witch and Aslan, whereas the second group ‘Edmund’, will have a much more frightening time, as they will visit the White Witch’s palace, get chased by wolves and to top it all off they may even end up getting turned to stone!

The show has been specifically designed for school children who will have the opportunity to view the performance during the day, but it will also be open to families and adults on evenings and weekends.

Leftbank Leeds is hoping to get 200 people involved in this performance. Workshop auditions are being held 2-5pm on Sunday 5th May, Saturday 11th May, Sunday 12th May, Saturday 15th June and Sunday 16th June.

The demand for foster carers in the local area has recently increased and Leeds City Council has set themselves the target of recruiting 200 foster carers over the next two years.

Councillor Judith Blake, Leeds City Council executive member responsible for children’s services is encouraging those who are interested to come forward. She said “By becoming a foster carer with Leeds City Council we are able to offer excellent support and training along with access to a large fostering support network together with our partners. Using Leeds foster carers helps children to remain within their local communities and schools, which is key to our aim to be a child friendly city”.

You might think you don’t have what it takes to become a foster carer, but contrary to popular belief there isn’t a stereotypical type of person. Anyone can become a foster carer, and Foster4Leeds welcome people from all religions, races, genders and sexuality, as well as those who are married, single, in a relationship, divorced, widowed, employed or unemployed. The only requirements are that you need to be available to foster full-time, be non-smokers and have a spare bedroom.

If you want to find out how you can make a difference to young people’s lives, you can come along to a special drop-in session which is being held at Woodside Methodist Church in Horsforth on Thursday 9 May from 4pm to 8pm. Fostering officers will be on hand to provide you with information about what it’s like to be a foster carer and answer any questions you might have. For further details please visit www.foster4leeds.co.uk or call the dedicated foster care recruitment line on 0113 2477443.

As part of the response to city wide emergencies, the council’s Emergency Planning Team is responsible for the coordination and mobilisation of council services and resources. Examples of emergencies we respond to are severe weather and evacuations.

Often in liaison with the Emergency Services and other professional partners, the council provides support to those directly affected but also aims to warn and inform the wider public of an incident.

The Emergency Planning Team have joined the social media revolution and created a Twitter account … @leedsemergency. This will be one of the methods used to notify the public of incidents, particularly those with the potential to significantly impact areas of Leeds.

As an example, throughout the recent flooding event numerous ‘tweets’ were posted providing flooding advice and guidance, signposting to partner websites and notifying people of several localised issues.

Though you may not be directly involved in an incident, having an awareness of a situation may be of use. You may have a vulnerable family member or friends living nearby to the incident that you could advise or contact to check they are okay. It should help you make informed decisions during disruption to allow you to protect you and your family.

Whatever the reason, you are encouraged to follow the Emergency Planning Team @leedsemergency.

Tristan Mackay was once a popular busker on the streets of Leeds, entertaining thousands of passing shoppers and commuters each day. Now he is performing to thousands in venues such as Shepherds Bush Empire.

Tristan Mackay used to occupy various spots around Leeds city centre, most notable outside WH Smiths and in the middle of Briggate. After being discovered by Grammy award winning producer Martin Levan he produced his debut album ‘Out Along the Wire’. The album was funded independently and released under Tristan’s own label ‘Battered Hat Records’ which subsequently shot straight to number one in the British Blues Chart and received 4 out of 5 review stars in the music press.

Kickstarter

Since the success of his first album Tristan has toured extensively and is now ready to begin recording his second album and has turned to popular funding website Kickstarter to reach out to his fans for financial backing in return for a whole host of goodies, included an intimate gig for potential pledgers and their friends live from their living room! To find out more about his Kickstarter project watch the video below.

The second album titled ‘Wire and Wood’ will again be produced by Grammy award winning producer Martin Levan and feature the same world class band as the first. The goal has been set at £10,000 and pledges can start from as little as £1 and go all the way up to over £1000, with the prizes gradually getting better the more you pledge.

Get involved

To find out more and how you can pledge to Tristan’s follow up album ‘Wire and Wood’ head to his Kickstarter page here.

A number of free pitches on the open market at Kirkgate Market are being offered to budding small business owners who want to make their mark in trading.

Leeds Kirkgate Market has teamed up with the NMTF to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs in Leeds to start up a business on the market. The NMTF (National Market Traders Federation) is the leading trade body for the markets industry in the UK. Representing about 30,000 market traders in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the NMTF provides unrivalled business insurance, political representation and training programmes to market traders throughout the UK.

Through a scheme called First Pitch, which is supported by Leeds City Council, small businesses owners of the future can trade on the open market for up to 12 months at discounted rent and are given personalised support from the NMTF.

Back to their roots

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member for development and the economy said, “The open market is an important place for new businesses start-ups and offers people the chance to try out trading to see if it works for them. A great example of this is M&S who have just returned to their roots in the market. We want to encourage entrepreneurs across the city to start-up businesses and this scheme is a great way of doing that. I wish all the participants well in their first experience of trading on the market.”

Mentoring

Joe Harrison, Chief Executive of the NMTF said, “Many of our well-known brands started life on the markets and we know many people want to take that leap into starting their own business – First Pitch will give you the support you need to bring a product or service to the market. If you’re selected as a Finalist, you are given free membership of the NMTF, a free copy of a market trader training guide and a mentor, someone who has a wealth of business and market trading experience. Interested applicants need to apply by 19th April via www.nmtf.co.uk.”

First Pitch is open to UK residents over 16 with less than six months experience of market trading.
